Description:	The Bladen Nature Reserve (BNR) is Belizeís most significant terrestrial protected area. Despite its biological significance, the BNR has persisted to date as a paper park, with largely inexistent field and administrative management. Threats to the BNRís ecological integrity have grown at a rapid pace and scale. Most recently, there has been construction of a series of large roads running from the Trio village to the reserveís border. In the three months since the roads were discovered, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of local villagers trying to gain access to the Bladen River and the surrounding lands. The number of incidents of trespassing, illegal hunting, fishing, and logging has risen to critical levels. The increase in illegal activities and the questionable process leading to construction of the roads reflects the current social, political, and administrative climate in Belize, necessitating immediate action to properly manage the reserve.
