map
Topography:Largest of eastern catchments comprising the western Cockscomb Basin and lateral discontinuity between metamorphic and sedimentary blocks. Relative relief is some 800m with a majority of steep to very steep slopes over 25 degrees with few medium slopes and 35% planar coastal areas.
Geology & Soils:The Swasey drains mostly ancient igneous rocks and metasediments with acid leached soils as does the Bladen, which runs along and behind the Jurassic limestone of the coastal fringing hills without receiving much runoff from them.
Land Use:Land use is forestry with some rolling hills cleared for cattle and banana and mango and citrus across the lower slopes and long channels and in valley bottoms. Milpa clearing is common along medium slopes. Total agriculture is 2,769 ha with 76 ha urban.
Climate:Mostly the whole catchment is in the 2500-3000mm belt.
Hydrology:Two distinctly different tributary catchments, the extremely dense drainage network of multiple, dendritic tributaries of the Swasey branch and the trellised asymmetrical network of the Bladen Branch, coalesce at the edge of the relatively narrow coastal plain to form the meandering Monkey River. Bladen Branch discharges of 16-20 m3/s have been recorded for the average annual daily flows of 1.2-1.8m depth and an annual stage range between a low flow of 0.6m and high flow of 4.6m. Similar discharges were recorded for the Swasey Branch with a recorded annual stage range from 1.1 to 2.2m. The combined Monkey River flow is expected to be a daily average of around 35-40 m3/s. Drainage area of 1,275.4 km2.
Water Quality:No data is available. Background chemistry will probably reflect the siliceous rocks with low hardness and alkalinity and a largely neutral pH. However, karstic conditions on the Bladen Branch could result in elevated hardness and alkalinity during low flows.
Sources of Pollution:Non-point agrochemical and organic pollutants from return runoff from irrigation and banana drainage, coupled with periodic flooding of the Swasey. Non-point microbial and organic contaminants might be present from cattle rearing.
Higk Risk Zones:Swasey Branch; Swasey Stopper Fall to logans Bank; Valley bottom and coastal plain +/- 2Km
  Reasons for
  Contamination:
Banana plantations (particularly Cowpen area)
  Contaminants:Fertilizers, Pesticides, Alum, Organic Material
Gauging Stations: - Bladen Bridge Station
 - Swasey Bridge Station
