Quick Links:
Map Elements
Pan Arrows PAN ARROWS - Click these arrows surrounding the map image allow you 'pan' the image - to navigate in any direction.
Map Scale MAP SCALE - This displays the scale of the map at the current level of magnification (in metres).
Scale Bar SCALE BAR - This displays the scale units in kilometres, reflecting the current map scale.
Button Toolbar
Zoom In Button ZOOM IN - Click this button to zoom into the map by...
  1. click on a location on the map
  2. click-drag a rectangle over an area of the map. Upon releasing the mouse button, the map will zoom into that area.
Zoom Out Button ZOOM OUT - Click this button to zoom out the map (reduce magnification).
Zoom Full Button ZOOM FULL - Click this button to zoom out the map completely, returning to original scale.
Query Button QUERY - Click this button and then click a point on the Map to query all visible layers. Results will be tabulated and appear in a pop-up window. Results are dependent on the layers queried and the information returned. Map scale affects query accuracy. If results appear 'abnormal', try zooming in a bit closer. The larger the map scale, the larger the mouse cursor's query 'footprint'. [see example]. Some results are linked to extensive information profiles for that data record.
Click the profile icon profile Icon to view this information.
Print Button PRINT - Click this button to print a publishable-quality version of the map (at current magnification). The Print Configuration Tool will appear in the lower right section of the application. With this tool, you can customise how the map prints and what elements appear on the final map image, an Adobe Acrobat file. [see example].
Help Button HELP - Click this button to view this page... The 'Map Explorer Help Desk.'
Tools Tab
Measure Line Button MEASURE LINE - Click this button to measure the distance between two points or a multi-point line segment. Shift-click to end the drawing of the line.
Reference Map REFERENCE MAP - This reference map indicates the location within the total area (Belize) where the map is zoomed in. You can click this reference map to pan the larger map.
Coordinates COORDINATES - These coordinates represent accurate Easting and Northing UTM coordinates for the main map image. They reflect the current coordinates of the mouse cursor on the main map.
Layers Tab
Layers Tree LAYERS - This is the Layers selection tree. Using an expandable/collapsible file tree menu, the user can select (or deselect) spatial data (GIS) layers to overlay on the large map image. The default base map layer is called 'Districts.' Layers are grouped into logical thematic categories for easier identification. Groups can be expanded or collapsed by clicking on the (+) or (-) icons, respectively. Checkboxes indicate which layers are currently displayed. Users can select or deselect any layers for display using the check boxes. A group is 'checked' only when all layers of that group are selected. Clicking the 'Refresh' button (see below) will load the selected layers onto the main map image. Clicking the 'Clear' button will deselect all layers. To maintain accuracy, layers are only visible at certain scales. To see a layer on the map that you have previously selected, you may need to zoom in or zoom out further before that layer becomes visible on the map.
Specimen layers SPECIMEN LAYERS - This is the area of selection for viewing Specimen data. Using an expandable/collapsible file tree menu, the user can select (or deselect) specimen-based GIS layers to overlay on the large map image.

Clicking the 'Refine Selection' button (see left) will load the specimen data selector menu below the layer area. Clicking 'Clear Selection' will clear all selected species from the layer.

Specimen layers
Clicking the 'Select Species' link (at left) will bring up a pop-up window which will allow you to select a species. You may select up to four (4) species to show simultaneously on the Map. You will need to repeat the selection process (below) for each species. When finished with your selection, merely click the 'Refresh' button to draw these new species layers.

To select a species to display.
  1. Click the 'Select Species' link
  2. Use the popup window to select a species from which to display available specimen collections records. You can choose two different methods to search for a species.

Method 1: Use the 'Select Kingdom' menu to search for a specimen by navigating through the taxonomic hierarchy.
Method 2: Use the 'Search for Genus' box to search for a genus name or partial genus name.
  3. Once you have selected your species of interest, click the 'Finish' button to close the window and insert your species into the Specimen layer menu
  4. To remove a species, simply click the 'Clear Selection' link below the desired species to remove
  5. You must follow this process for every species you want to load.
  6. To load your species layer onto the map, simply click the 'Refresh' button.
  7. <
Refresh Button REFRESH - Click this button to refresh the main map image with the selected (checked) layers.
Clear Button CLEAR - Click this button to deselect all layers, except the default 'Districts' Layer
Legend Tab
Legend LEGEND - This tab displays a map legend. The legend will display only those layers currently displayed on the map (and selected in the Layers Tab). Layers in the legend are displayed in the order that the layers are displayed on the map image (the topmost layers appear first in the Legend listing).
Search Tab
Search SEARCH - The Search Tab contains natureSmith's unique Visual Search Engine technology. Through this tab, users are able to select and search for various types of non-spatial (atypical) data using the Map Explorer interface.
  • Select one or more types of data.
  • Click the QUERY button on the toolbar query button
  • Draw a search box (rectangle) around the area you would like to search
The Map Explorer wil then return your search results in a pop-up window. If you do not find what you are looking for, try again by repeating the process above but drawing a larger 'search box' area.

Selecting the "Select All Data Types" checkbox will select all types of data listed.

If you are searching for biological specimens, you can click [Refine Search]. This brings up a pop-up window which allows you to drill-down the taxonomic hierarchy and refine your search criteria for specimens. You can stop at any taxonomic level and begin searching from that point. Perhaps you only want to search at the 'Class' level or maybe you are looking for a specific 'subspecies' of plant. You can make the search as gross- or fine-scale as you want by how far down the taxonomic hierarchy you chose to proceed before beginning your search. [see example]

Results are dependent on the layers queried and the information returned. [see example]. Mouse-based Tool-tips and icons visually indicate the types of data results found. A tooltip-based icon legend icon Legend is available. Or drag you mouse cursor over an icon to determine the data type. All results are linked to extensive information profiles for that data record. Click the profile icon profile Icon to view this information.
