Belize Fire Risk Map is a digital approximation of wild
fire risk to natural areas in Belize. The data was compiled
using a variety of parameters obtained from a number of
different sources.
Purpose:
The dataset was developed to aid in the Conservation
Planning of Belize.

These data are not to be taken as legal defenitions of
names, settlements or their location. Preferential Scale 1:250.000

Process_Description:
Basis for the map is the 2004 updated version of the Belize
Ecosystems Map (Meerman, 2004). This in its turn was based
on January and February 2004 Landsat TM satellite images.
The process took 9 different variables into account.
Social, Physical and Ecological. Each of these variables is
represented in its own attribute (individual attributes no
longer present in this dissolved version): Ecosys_fir
= Risk classes 0-5. Based on Belize Ecosystems Map,
Meerman, 2004.
Cohune_fir = Risk classes 0-2. Based on high incidence of
Cohune (Attalea cohune) palms which are highly flammable.
Distribution based on Wright 1959 and Penn, 2004.
Savannafir = Risk classes 0 and 2. (Pine) savanna with 500
m buffer
indicating high risk of fire penetration in surrounding
ecosystems. = Risk classes 0-3. Mechanized agriculture with
500 m buffer indicating medium risk of fire penetration in
surrounding ecosystems. Non-mechanized agriculture with
1000 m buffer indicating high risk of fire penetration in
surrounding ecosystems. Based on Belize Ecosystems Map,
Meerman, 2004.
Social_fir = Risk classes 0-3. Combines 2 different
parameters: Human settlements with 6 km buffer with the
class value based on poverty data of 2000 population
sensus. = Risk classes 0 and 2. Areas with slopes of >
10% were assigned risk class 2. Based on digital elevation
model of Belize.
Rainrisk = Risk classes 0 - 4. Based on Walker 1976
rainfall isohyets for Belize.
Totalrisk = Total of all values above. Total risk is the
only attribute available in this version.
